If you ever want to change the resulting screenshots from a PNG to a JPG to something else (like PDF), you can do that via a free program called Onyx. ⌃⇧⌘-4, followed by space (control-shift-command-4, followed by space): This brings up the crosshair cursor which allows you to take just a partial screen shot of your screen. Select any image on your screen and find dozens similar images. You can edit screenshots instantly when taking them or later using a powerful online editor. ⌃⇧⌘-4 (control-shift-command-4): This will result in a picture of the selected area to the clipboard. Upload your screenshot to the server and get its short link right away. When the item you want to shoot is highlighted, click the mouse.This will result in a image file on your desktop. The pointer turns into a camera icon that highlights items beneath it, as shown on the left. ⇧⌘-4, followed by space (shift-command-4, followed by space): To take a screen shot of a selected item, such as an open window, an icon, or the Desktop, press Command Shift 4, then press the Spacebar (this one is my favorite by far). This will result in a image file on your desktop. ⇧⌘-4 (shift-command-4): To get a crosshair cursor to take a screen shot of just a portion of the screen, press Command Shift 4. Very handy if you don't want to actually deal with the file sitting on your desktop. Lightshot is available for Windows / Mac, Chrome, Firefox, IE & Opera.
Paste it into any application you want (Mail, Photoshop, Messages, etc).
